Changing the Game for Your Practice

MyDay® multifocal contact lenses provide practitioners with an opportunity to fit more patients with presbyopia in contact lenses1—and grow their practices.

Eye care professionals who shy away from fitting multifocal contact lenses are missing out on a valuable opportunity to grow their practices. This game-changing lens from CooperVision not only opens the door for new wearers,2 but for keeping existing wearers in contact lenses even after they reach presbyopia.2

MyDay® multifocal features the latest innovation in multifocal contact lens technology, CooperVision Binocular Progressive System®, an innovative 3 Add system that caters to all levels of presbyopia with simplified fitting, optimal visual acuity at all distances,3,4 and comfortable wear for high performance5. In fact, 97% of patients can be successfully fit in MyDay® multifocal in just one visit,3 saving valuable time for both the practitioner and the wearer by preventing the need for follow-up appointments.

We hear a lot about how MyDay® multifocal has changed doctors’ perception of fitting multifocal contact lenses. But what about your staff? What are their views on this lens?

Patel:         Prior to MyDay® multifocal, we did not proactively talk to patients about multifocal lenses like we do now. When a multifocal patient did come through the exam lane, there was this attitude among the staff like, “Ugh, we’re going to get behind schedule because this will take so much time.” Now, with MyDay® multifocal, we have all these wins—we can’t believe how well patients are seeing right away. Our staff gets excited about it. A lot of times the technician will come out of the room from the pre-exam and give me a heads up, “This one might be a really great candidate for MyDay® multifocal,” which is something that never happened before.

Heitmeyer: I had the benefit of having two technicians with presbyopia who were easy candidates to fit in MyDay® multifocal. They were among the first to try it in our practice, and they had that “wow” moment with the comfort and vision. They started talking up the lens around the office and suddenly I had opticians tapping me on the shoulder asking if they can try it, too. Now we have several staff members wearing it and they are a great advertisement because they’ll proactively tell patients, “There is this new lens I’m wearing that I love.”

Flanagan:  Our staff loves that we have less patients coming back for follow-ups or troubleshooting because we get most of them happy with that initial fit.

Foster:       One of the greatest things with MyDay® multifocal is that using the OptiExpert fitting app empowers my staff. Our contact lens technicians feel like they’re making a decision when they use the calculator, and it gives them a sense of ownership in what they’re doing. Overall, that makes them more engaged and more excited about fitting, which I hope helps with retention since they feel they have a purpose in our office.

Has MyDay® multifocal helped you grow your multifocal practice? How?

Flanagan:  From my perspective as a newer associate in a practice that has been around for 45 years, MyDay® multifocal is a huge opportunity for me to build my patient base. Successfully fitting patients in this lens gives them confidence in me as a doctor, which leads to them returning to see me, maybe purchasing glasses and other products from our optical side, and referring others as well. Building their confidence in me is incredibly important for someone who has only been practicing a few years.

Foster:       At our practice, we don’t focus on any one contact lens manufacturer. But when I looked, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the highest selling lens year-to-date was MyDay® multifocal—and that’s out of any lens on the market, not just multifocals. That was pretty powerful to me. And because we have been so successful with it, I find I’m reaching much more often for MyDay® toric and MyDay® sphere as well.

Heitmeyer: As a whole, our multifocal fits are up as well. In addition, I looked at product utilization to see what we’re prescribing most, and we’ve seen a huge migration from our other multifocal products to MyDay® multifocal.

What would you tell other doctors about fitting MyDay® multifocal?

Flanagan: For newer doctors—in school, there is a stigma that multifocals are difficult to fit, but this lens is so easy to fit if you just trust the fitting guide. I would tell new doctors that CooperVision did such a great job of making this a great, easy-to-fit lens and everybody should be prescribing MyDay® multifocal to give their patients with presbyopia the best vision in their everyday lives.

Tang:         I will say that it has incredible optics, it’s super comfortable, and patients love this lens. I would encourage doctors just to try it and see what happens, because I think they’ll find the feedback they get is remarkable.

Foster:       My main advice is not to assume anything. A patient may have worn glasses their entire lives, or they could have been told at one point that they can’t wear contact lenses for whatever reason. Just bring it up again—otherwise, you won’t know for sure if a patient wants to continue correcting their vision the same way they always have. I have had appointments where I have left feeling guilty that we hadn’t talked to the patient about it a long time ago. The last thing I want is for one of my patients to hear about it from someone else. We should always be the ones telling them about the latest and greatest technology.
