Unparalleled Partnership: Supporting Optometry

a group of people in a circle holding their hands together to symbolize teamwork and support

No matter where you practice, your area of specialty, or your role in the profession, one commitment that binds every eye care professional is patient care.

Our profession is vast yet intimately connected in many ways. One profession dedicated to a single mission…elevating patient care…unites us all.

Whether you are an optometrist, staff member, optometric educator or student, we are here to support you and your success.

Here’s a snapshot of six critical and diverse ways that CooperVision supports the profession and you.

1. Championing Legislative Advocacy

CooperVision is a charter member of the Health Care Alliance for Patient Safety. In this role, CooperVision remains at the forefront of legislative efforts to protect contact lens safety, in addition to engaging with state legislatures to influence policy.

One example: CooperVision’s leadership was recently on Capitol Hill advocating for the recently re-introduced Contact Lens Prescription Verification and Modernization Act. This proposed bill aims to amend the Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act by modernizing the verification of contact lens prescriptions and removing the passive robocall loophole.

Another example: Change Agents from The Myopia Collective, a partnership between the AOA and CooperVision, along with doctors from CooperVision’s US Professional and Academic Affairs team, met with US Congressmen to advocate for the Early Detection of Vision Impairments for Children Act (EDVI). This bill would establish the first national-level program in the United States specifically aimed at improving children’s vision and eye health.

2. Empowering Future Contact Lens Leaders

CooperVision has created a dynamic suite of  Student Programs designed to complement classroom and clinical learning with real-world experience and leadership development opportunities. These initiatives reflect our commitment to partnering with students through every step of their educational journey and beyond.

A few of these innovative student programs include:

  • Bright Fellows Program: A recognition program for third- and fourth-year optometry students who engage in a wide range of educational opportunities.

  • Contact Lens Leadership Society: Provides educational experiences for an optometry student at each school and college of optometry in North America interested in elevating their contact lens knowledge.

  • Give Brightly Program: Provides complimentary contact lenses to assist patients who may otherwise not have access to contact lenses as a vision correction option and promotes a positive CL fitting experience for optometry students and residents.

3. Leading the Way in Myopia Management

CooperVision’s MiSight® 1 day is the first FDA-approved* soft contact lens for myopia control.†1 Another myopia milestone: MiSight® 1 day’s clinical trial represents the longest running international study of soft contact lenses for myopia control. Further, today, more than 225,000 children worldwide wear MiSight® 1 day.2

Additionally, our leadership with The Myopia Collective is elevating myopia care through education and advocacy. Going into its second year, The Myopia Collective continues to rally the profession and its allies to interrupt the status quo and realize a new standard of care for children with myopia.3

4. Delivering on Sustainability

CooperVision is deeply committed to the well-being of our planet.‡4 As part of this mission, we have implemented a wide range of sustainability and resource conservation programs at our facilities worldwide, including our LEED-certified manufacturing sites in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, and NY.§5,6

We are also proud of our partnership with Plastic Bank® which began in 2021, making us the first contact lens manufacturer to provide a full range of net plastic neutral lenses..à7 Through this collaboration, CooperVision funds the collection and recycling of ocean-bound plastic equivalent to the weight of plastic used in participating products sold and distributed across participating countries.¶**8 To date, the program has prevented the equivalent of more than 643 million plastic bottles from entering the world's oceans.††9

5. Lending a Hand to Our Neighbors

Taking care of our partners in our backyard and across the globe are driving forces in how and why we support the profession. In this vein, CooperVision is a Global Gold Sponsor of Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) and is an ardent supporter of its mission to eradicate preventable blindness. Recently, CooperVision and its employees around the world cumulatively raised more than five million dollars for the OGS World Sight Day Challenge.

Additionally, CooperVision continues to support AFOS, VOSH, and Optometry Cares: The AOA Foundation including its Disaster Relief Program, while also providing donations and discounted lenses for underserved populations.

6. Providing Tools for ECP Success

CooperVision offers a wealth of resources and educational tools to propel the success of eye care professionals and their staff.

These include:

‡Every CooperVision® net plastic neutral contact lens sold and distributed helps contribute to life-improving benefits in coastal communities heavily impacted by pollution and poverty. Net plastic neutrality is established by purchasing credits from Plastic Bank. A credit represents the collection and conversion of one kilogram of plastic that may reach or be destined for waterways. CooperVision purchases credits equal to the weight of plastic in participating brand orders in a specified time period. Plastic in participating brands is determined by the weight of plastic in the blister, the lens, and the secondary package, including laminates, adhesives, and auxiliary inputs (e.g. ink). Life-improving benefits refer to support provided to eligible Plastic Bank collectors and their family members through CooperVision's funding of Plastic Bank programs, which may include access to vision care, grocery vouchers, and other essentials.
