ActivControl® Technology: Unique Mechanism of Action Behind Real World Results

A child’s myopia diagnosis can elicit numerous questions from parents, including those centered around your prescribed treatment of MiSight® 1 day* soft contact lenses. No matter the size of your myopia control practice, these typical exam room questions likely ring familiar: How does MiSight® 1 day work? Do we really need to do this? Isn’t my child too young to wear contact lenses?

Recently, CooperVision’s Dr. Priscilla Chang detailed the unique and intentional design behind MiSight® 1 day, in addition to the sustained efficacy and real-world results behind MiSight®’s seven-year study.

Here are some highlights.

MiSight® 1 day’s Innovative Design with ActivControl® Technology

MiSight® 1 day utilizes ActivControl® Technology, an optical design specifically created to simultaneously correct nearsightedness and help slow myopia progression in age-appropriate children.†1 ActivControl® Technology combines alternating treatment zones with distance correction zones. This innovative design allows children (aged 8-12 at the initiation of treatment) to enjoy the freedom from wearing glasses while helping to slow down the progression of myopia.†1

7-Year Study Illustrates Efficacy and Safety

During its initial 3-year study period, MiSight® 1 day with  ActivControl® Technology slowed the progression of myopia in children by 59% on average †1while 41% of treated eyes experienced no meaningful progression in refractive error after 3 years.‡§1 At six years, no serious contact lens related adverse events were reported.2 Finally, at the international study’s seven-year endpoint, researchers found no evidence of mean axial length rebound.◊3,4

Convenience and Comfort: Children Do Well in Contacts

Children as young as 8 years old demonstrate successful handling and confidence soon after initial fitting.¶1 Further, a survey conducted with children aged 8-12 years old who were new to contact lens wear revealed that 57% found handling MiSight® 1 day to be “kind of easy” or “really easy” after one week, which improved to 85% by 1 month.5

*Indications for use: MiSight® 1 day (omafilcon A) soft (hydrophilic) contact lenses for daily wear are indicated for the correction of myopic ametropia and for slowing the progression of myopia in children with non-diseased eyes, who at the initiation of treatment are 8-12 years of age and have a refraction of -0.75 to -4.00 diopters (spherical equivalent) with ≤ 0.75 diopters of astigmatism. The lens is to be discarded after each removal.

◊ Preliminary international study data shows that, on average, for children that discontinued treatment at age 14-19 following 3 or 6 years of MiSight® 1 day wear, the eye growth reverted to age-expected average myopic progression rates. Disclaimer: The stability of the myopia reduction effect 1-year post-treatment is being further evaluated in a post-approval study in the U.S. as a condition of FDA approval for MiSight 1 day.
