• CooperVision’s Plastic Neutrality Initiative Reaches Remarkable Half-Billion Bottle Milestone

Innovative Sustainability Partnership Celebrates Far-Reaching Impacts on People + Planet

ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 17, 2025—CooperVision today announced a significant milestone in its pioneering plastic neutrality initiative.1 The multi-continent program—in collaboration with Plastic Bank®, eye care professionals, and contact lens wearers—has now prevented the equivalent of more than half a billion plastic bottles from entering the world’s oceans.*2

“Ahead of Earth Day, we are thrilled to celebrate this incredible accomplishment. Practitioners and wearers who choose CooperVision plastic neutral contact lenses have been central to creating such an enormous impact, and we are proud to have partnered with them and Plastic Bank in helping people + planet,” said Aldo Zucaro, Senior Director, Corporate Responsibility, CooperCompanies. “Every bottle collected prevents plastic waste from polluting our oceans and land, help to protect ecosystems and wildlife. Half a billion bottles is an amazing milestone—if you put them end-to-end, you could circle the earth two and a half times.”

In partnership with Plastic Bank, CooperVision funds the collection and recycling of ocean-bound plastic equivalent to the weight of plastic used across a range of its participating soft contact lenses, including the lens, blister and packaging components, that are sold and distributed across 34 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.†3

“While the achievement should be celebrated, it is not our end goal—we are always seeking ways to do more,” continued Zucaro. “This journey is ongoing, and we are excited for what’s ahead. Together, we can make an even greater difference for People + Planet.”

Beyond the environmental benefits, CooperVision’s plastic neutrality initiative elevates the lives of Plastic Bank collector members in hundreds of coastal communities.2 In exchange for the ocean-bound plastic waste they collect, adults receive credits to purchase goods and services, including health, work and life insurance, digital connectivity, grocery vouchers, school supplies, and more.3 CooperVision also provides vision screenings and vouchers for complimentary eye examinations and spectacles for eligible Plastic Bank collection members.4

CooperVision and Plastic Bank have been partners since the initiative’s start in 2021. A mini-documentary series filmed on site in Indonesia highlights different aspects of the collaboration, with episodes available at www.CooperVision.com/Bali.

As a leading manufacturer of contact lenses, CooperVision is continuously working to minimize its environmental impact and operate more sustainably around the globe. This includes efforts that extend well beyond plastic neutrality. The company has a strong track record of sustainable manufacturing and operations resulting in award-winning conservation efforts in Puerto Rico5 and prestigious sustainability certifications in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Spain, the U.K., and the U.S.‡§6,7 At the center of CooperVision’s sustainability platform is its commitment to design with intention and embrace innovation as a means for caring for People + Planet.

    * CooperVision, through its collaboration with Plastic Bank, to have collected and converted approximately 10.26M kg of plastic destined for waterways as of April 2025. Using Plastic Bank's metric of 1kg of plastic equaling 50 standard 202mm bottles, that will be the equivalent of approximately 513M plastic bottles not reaching our oceans.
† Plastic used in participating CooperVision soft contact lens products is determined by the weight of plastic in the blister, the lens, and the secondary package, including laminates, adhesives, and auxiliary inputs (e.g. ink). The determination does not include plastic used during the manufacturing process for both these products and their packaging.
‡ CooperVision has achieved Zero Waste Program Certification for six of its global manufacturing and distribution sites — Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico; Alajuela, Costa Rica; Delta Park and Mount Park in the UK; and Scottsville & West Henrietta, NY — reflecting their success in preventing or diverting waste from landfills. • CooperVision Achieves Zero Waste Certification at Six Global Manufacturing and Distribution Facilities

U.S., U.K, and Costa Rica Sites Celebrated for Reducing and Diverting Waste from Landfills

ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 10, 2025—Affirming its ongoing commitment to sustainability, CooperVision has earned Zero Waste Facility Program Certification for six of its global contact lens manufacturing and distribution sites.* 1 The certification, which demonstrates the degree to which operations prevent or divert waste from landfills, was attained by the company’s facilities in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico; Alajuela, Costa Rica; Delta Park and Mount Park in the U.K.; and Scottsville and West Henrietta, N.Y.* 1

Each site was evaluated and certified individually by SCS Global Services (SCS), an international leader in third-party environmental and sustainability certifications, under its latest Zero Waste standard. CooperVision facilities, which have varying diversion percentages, achieved certification through a combination of recycling, composting, waste-to-energy, resale, and reuse.* 1

“Getting the waste diverse certified at all six of these facilities is not only a celebration of our current efforts but serves as another significant benchmark of progress in our sustainability journey,” said Rolando Torres, Chief Operations Officer, CooperVision. “Our teams continuously explore opportunities to operate more sustainably across the entire business. We won’t stop here.”

The Zero Waste Facility Certification reflects the latest milestone in CooperVision’s environmental initiatives focused on conserving energy; reducing, reusing, and recycling resources; and empowering people within the company and the communities in which it operates.*† 1 CooperVision’s facilities in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Scottsville, and West Henrietta also hold prestigious LEED® certifications, and Mount Park a BREEAM® “Excellent” rating.‡ 2,3

CooperVision pioneered the world’s first plastic neutral contact lenses§ 4 through a partnership with Plastic Bank®, through which the company purchases credits to fund the collection, processing, and reuse of general ocean-bound plastic waste that is equal to the weight of the plastic contained in the product.◊ 5 The initiative has had an environmental impact equivalent to more than 466 million plastic bottles recovered since its inception in 2021. ¶ 6 CooperVision now offers a complete portfolio of net plastic neutral contact lenses in designated countries.

The company is continuously working to minimize environmental impact and support People + Planet around the globe as part of broader efforts across CooperCompanies to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.** 2,5 For more information, visit coopervision.com/sustainability.

  • CooperVision Celebrates World Cleanup Day with Plastic Neutrality Milestone, Premieres Docuseries Showcasing Impact of Initiative

CooperVision Celebrates World Cleanup Day with Plastic Neutrality Milestone,
Premieres Docuseries Showcasing Impact of Initiative

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 20, 2024—Showcasing its commitment to sustainability, CooperVision announced today that its landmark net plastic neutral contact lens initiative has now resulted in the prevention of the equivalent of more than 360 million plastic bottles from entering the oceans.*1 In addition, the company’s innovative partnership with Plastic Bank has been captured through a new mini-documentary series, with the first episode now available. The news comes on World Cleanup Day, which is dedicated to uniting millions of people, organizations, and governments to tackle global waste and help create a more sustainable world.

CooperVision pioneered the plastic neutral model†2 for the contact lens industry in 2021 and has continued to expand the global initiative’s scope, adding two new European countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, earlier this month. Collaborating with Plastic Bank, CooperVision funds the collection and recycling of ocean-bound plastic equivalent to the weight of plastic used in participating products sold and distributed across what is now 29 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.‡3

“As the first manufacturer to provide a full range of plastic neutral soft contact lenses,†2 we are transforming and improving the well-being of People + Planet3,” said Aldo Zucaro, Senior Director, Corporate Responsibility, CooperCompanies. “Thanks to our Plastic Bank partnership, the eye care professionals who prescribe CooperVision plastic neutral contact lenses—and the people who wear them—together, we embody the spirit and impact of World Cleanup Day year-round.”

In addition to the environmental benefits, CooperVision’s net plastic neutrality initiative elevates the lives of Plastic Bank collector members in hundreds of coastal communities1—the subject of the new docuseries. In exchange for the ocean-bound plastic waste they collect, adults receive credits to purchase goods and services, including health, work and life insurance, digital connectivity, grocery vouchers, school supplies, and more.4 A vision care program provides vision screenings and vouchers for complimentary eye examinations and glasses for eligible Plastic Bank collection members.3

The first of five mini-documentaries, which features a day in the life of Ni Luh Made Kariasih—one of Plastic Bank’s collector members in Bali, Indonesia—can be viewed at CooperVision & Sustainability. Additional episodes highlighting different aspects of the plastic neutrality initiative with Plastic Bank will premiere over the coming months.
