New Research Reveals Parents’ and ECPs’ Perceptions on Myopia and Treatment

Eye care professionals (ECPs) who manage and treat childhood myopia may notice a majority of parents will express an urgency to act if their child is diagnosed with myopia, an insight recently unveiled in new research from CooperVision.1+

The results of a nationwide survey of more than 1,000 U.S. parents with children aged 5-15 revealed that if their child had been diagnosed with myopia,  65% of parents agreed they will search for a qualified doctor to prescribe MiSight® 1 day contact lenses for their age-appropriate child.2* Further, once a parent learns about MiSight® 1 day, 80% will act to learn more within a month.1+ Of note, 64% of parents agreed that if their age-appropriate child has been diagnosed with myopia, they will bring up MiSight® 1 day to their eye doctor at their next appointment.2

The research initiative also polled parents about where they would seek information if their child was diagnosed with myopia. The top response was online.2 Specifically, 72% of parents agreed that if their child has been diagnosed with myopia, they will conduct online research to learn more about it when considering MiSight® 1 day to treat their age-appropriate child’s myopia.2 This highlights the opportunity for heightened outreach and education in the exam room. To guide parents’ continued education and learning, there are several helpful resources that highlight real patient stories, insertion and removal help, education and answers to frequently asked questions on MiSight.com, YouTube (@MiSight), Instagram (@MiSightVision), and Facebook (/MiSightVision).

In addition to parent perceptions, roughly 120 U.S. MiSight® 1 day certified ECPs were also polled about their philosophies and approaches to myopia management and treatment.3

When thinking about pediatric patients with myopia and their decision-making process, 91% of U.S. ECPs already fitting MiSight® 1 day for age-appropriate children agree myopia management should be the standard of care3, a collective call to action made by the World Council of Optometry and CooperVision that started in April 2021.

Other key ECP findings: Among U.S. ECPs already practicing myopia control, 76% see the need and are treating low myopes (-0.50D to -1.00D)3, while 63% consider myopia a disease.3 Additionally, data shows that 81% of children aged 8 to 12 years with or at risk for myopia have spherical refractive errors between +0.50 and -2.00D.5

“From the beginning, we’ve emphasized what’s crucial to progress: a commitment from ECPs across the U.S. to embrace myopia management, act early, and adopt an evidence-based approach,” says Justin Kwan, OD, FAAO, Senior Manager, Myopia Management at CooperVision. “Our new research reflects that the mindset is changing with the behaviors of treating myopia hopefully soon to follow. We are grateful for the dedication from our ECP partners and their ongoing commitment to help preserve the vision and eye health of the children with myopia they treat.”

*Indications for use in the U.S.: MiSight® 1 day (omafilcon A) soft (hydrophilic) contact lenses for daily wear are indicated for the correction of myopic ametropia and for slowing the progression of myopia in children with non-diseased eyes, who at the initiation of treatment are 8-12 years of age and have a refraction of -0.75 to -4.00 diopters (spherical equivalent) with ≤ 0.75 diopters of astigmatism. The lens is to be discarded after each removal.
