SAN RAMON, Calif., March 5, 2020—To enable eye care professionals to address their astigmatic patients’ evolving presbyopic needs, CooperVision, Inc. has announced the availability of its new Biofinity® toric multifocal contact lenses. The company has begun initial shipments of the highly anticipated lenses, with nationwide availability expected in May.

The latest addition to CooperVision’s flagship Biofinity® family of lenses combines the comfort and  proven optical designs of Biofinity® toric—the #1 toric lens on the market1—and Biofinity® multifocal, which has also earned the trust of eye care professionals and wearers alike. Like all Biofinity® silicone hydrogel lenses, Biofinity® toric multifocal features CooperVision’s Aquaform® Technology, which offers superb breathability and higher moisture content to keep eyes comfortable and healthy.

“Correcting for astigmatism and presbyopia in a single contact lens is complex, and through our partnerships with eye care professionals, we have come to understand the challenges associated with fitting toric multifocal lenses,” said Michele Andrews, OD, Senior Director, Professional and Academic Affairs, North America, CooperVision. “With Biofinity® toric multifocal, all of that has changed; our advanced optical design and effective fitting guide have raised the bar. Prior to the introduction of this lens, wearers with astigmatism had to make compromises as they became presbyopic, but now we can offer the visual quality they have been looking for.”

CooperVision’s made-to-order advantage results in more than 200,000 unique Biofinity® toric multifocal prescription options2—46x more than ULTRA® Multifocal for Astigmatism3—ensuring that eye care professionals have the lens they need for each individual patient, resulting in the right fit, the first time. In fact, studies of Biofinity® toric multifocal showed a 93% success rate on initial fitting when using the fitting guide.4 And with 37% of toric lens wearers5 nearing or already experiencing presbyopia, the lens offers practitioners significant opportunity to successfully fit more astigmatic presbyopes in contact lenses.

Biofinity® toric multifocal features a combination of two of CooperVision’s trusted technologies:

  • Optimized Toric Lens Geometry provides the proven properties for high patient satisfaction, including uniform horizontal iso-thickness, an optimized ballast band design, a large toric optical zone, and a smooth continuous surface. Initial product research found that the stability and orientation of Biofinity® toric multifocal is equivalent to Biofinity® toric.6
  • Balanced Progressive® Technology offers multiple zones of vision correction, allowing for exceptional vision at near distance, far away, and in between. It is optimized for each sphere and add power, with the option of fitting a center D or center N lens.

“As the market leader in toric contact lenses7, our customers have called on CooperVision to develop a lens to help them successfully transition their astigmatic patients into their presbyopic years,” said Dr. Andrews. “We are proud to introduce Biofinity® toric multifocal to address that need.”

Biofinity® toric multifocal lenses are available in sphere powers from +10.00 to -10.00 (0.50 steps after +/-6.00D), with cylinder powers from -0.75 to -5.75 (0.50 steps), an axis of 5 degrees to 180 degrees in 5-degree steps, and add powers of +1.00, +1.50, +2.00, and +2.50.
